Styles and Masterhands in Tribal Art

Bernard de Grunne is the author of many books and articles on tribal art styles. In his latest research, he identified 7 Baule 'Masters', giving each a name of convenience as these artists never signed or dated their works. Discover their seated statues at TEFAF Maastricht 2016 (until 20 March)! It took about 4 years to collect the rare collection of 18 seated figures from the Baule tribe in Central Ivory Coast, but also to research this phenomenon: why carving seated figures is so unusual.
